E ~ ~
July 20, 2000
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From Public Information Office, 682-2739
CONTACT: Marcia Peeters, Volunteer in Parks Coordinator, 915-5242
ROTARY CLUB BEAUTIFYING OWEN ROSE GARDEN
In a project dear to Mayor Jim Torrey's heart, members of the Eugene Delta Rotary Club will
be at the Owen Rose Garden Saturday morning, July 22, to continue work on the three-year
beautification plan adopted by the club last year. The beautification plan implements portions of the
master plan adopted by the City of Eugene. The Rotary Club is in the process of building a 185-foot
pergola - a structure designed for roses to climb over and people to walk under, similar to an open-
I' air walkway. The pergola will take visitors from the parking lot into the garden, leading them to a
wonderful view of roses, the historic Owen cherry tree and a proposed fountain, that is yet to be
built. A drawing of the proposed pergola will be available for viewing Saturday morning.
The Rotary Club will be working from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to place paver stones that will
lead beneath the pergola. Previously, club members have installed wooden borders around the rose
beds and along much of the garden's perimeter, and installed a 32-post trellis on the western
boundary of the garden, including digging and pouring the concrete footings for the trellis,
manufacturing the brackets, and installing the posts and wires. This year, they'll be extending the
trellis around the parking lot.
In their beautification efforts, volunteers typically weed, edge, rake, and "manicure" the
gravel paths throughout the garden, dead-head roses, and generally spruce up the garden. With the
warm weather bringing more and more visitors, their work is greatly appreciated.
Pwblic Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
