Signs mapping out the running trail
envisioned by former Olympic track star Steve Prefontaine will be unveiled at Alton Baker Park on
Thursday, August 10, at 12:30 p.m. The three signs offer a brief history of Prefontaine's brief
running career, along with pictures and maps showing distances of various loops of the trail overlaid
on an aerial map of the area. "Pre" blazed this trail while training for various track meets before his
death in 1975 at the age of 24. At the time of his death, Pre held the American record in every
distance race from 2,000 to 10,000 meters.
Pre's parents have been invited to unveil the signs, and speakers from the City of Eugene
and the Oregon Track Club will commemorate the occasion. The unveiling takes place off Leo
Harris Parkway, across the footbridge directly behind Autzen Stadium, on the first day of the USA
Track and Field National Masters Championship at Hayward Field. More than 1,500 Masters
athletes from all over the country will be competing at this three-day event -the largest number of
entrants ever for a U.S. National Masters track and field meet.
Partners. in the sign project include the Oregon Track Club, the Oregon Track Club Masters,
the Steve Prefontaine Foundation, the City of Eugene, and Willamalane Park and Recreation District.
(Editors -Direction to the event.• Take Centennial Blvd to the Leo Harris Parkway, drive to the

rear of
Autzen stadium, cross footbridge to sign.)
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
• Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
