August 14, 2000
CONTACT: Ron Sutton, Facility Management Manager, 682-5438
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PARK FOUNTAIN FISH SCULPTURE `GOOD AS NEW'
The fountain sculpture in downtown Eugene's West Park Block at Eighth Ave. and Oak St.
will soon be as good as new. A portion of the sculpture was removed earlier this summer to allow
repairs by the original sculptor, Tom Hardy, at his Portland studio. The fountain will be drained
early Wednesday morning, August 16th, and Mr. Hardy will supervise the welding work needed to
reattach the repaired piece. The repair work will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the fountain should be back
in service by late afternoon
The sculpture repairs are the finishing touch to a series of maintenance efforts coordinated

by the City's Public Works Facility Management Division that included pressure-washing the
surface of the fountain; grouting small cracks in the fountain's bowl; repairing the lip of the bowl
so that water flows over it in an even sheet; applying sealer to the aggregate concrete surface; and
installing a new waterproof membrane and river-sand finish to the collection basin at the base of the

pool. The estimated cost of the repairs is $6,000.
The scheduled sculpture repairs should not conflict with the public's use and enjoyment of

the Park Blocks area.
Public Works • Administration City of Eugene 858 Pearl Street Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262• FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
