Teri Higgins, Project Manager, 682-5560
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION WORK STARTS MONDAY AT TUGMAN PARK
Work is scheduled to begin Monday, August 21, on additional environmental remediation at the
site of the former Hilyard landfill in Tugman Park.
Delta Sand and Gravel has been retained by the Eugene Public Works Department to excavate
several areas where additional contaminants have been found and consolidate them under an extension of
the existing landfill cap. Approximately 1,500 cubic yards of soil that was removed from South Eugene
High School as part of the youth sports project work has been stockpiled at Tugman Park as capping
material. The work is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.
During construction, the upper end of the park, including the bike path that ?-uns through that part
of the park, will be closed. Pedestrians and cyclists can 39"' Avenue as an alternate route.
The City has been working the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality to ensure that any
contaminants at the former landfill site are within the public health and safety standards set by the DEQ.
Over the past eight years, the DEQ has directed the City to take a number of steps to address
contamination issues, including capping most of the former landfill. The current work is necessary
because four small areas of lead-contaminated soil have recently been found.
Additional information about the project, including a fact sheets with information about the
additional mitigation, is available on the Internet at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw.

II

I

I
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401

ii Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
