•
November 14, 2000
CONTACT: Eric Jones, Public Affairs Manager, 682-5523
From Public Information Section, 682-5262
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MANGAN PARK IN BETHEL-DANEBO AREA TO BE DEDICATED SUNDAY
A celebration on Sunday, November 19, will mark the completion of Eugene's newest
neighborhood park in the Bethel-Danebo area. The event begins at 1 p.m. at Mangan Park, located north
of Barger Avenue just east of Beltline (take Cubit Street to Wagner Street).
Councilor Pat Farr and members of the Active Bethel Citizens neighborhood group will be
joined by park neighbors and City park staff for a brief dedication ceremony, light refreshments,
horseshoe pitching, and other fun activities.
Planning for the neighborhood park began almost five years ago, before the area was fully
developed. The $500,000 park project, funded entirely through parks system development charges
(SDCs), is an example of how SDCs are invested in growth areas to meet increased demand for services.
The park includes a basketball court, large playground, horseshoe pits, picnic tables, drinking
fountains, a large open space, and a natural area to preserve several mature madrona trees and provide
places for native plantings. Students from nearby Willamette High School have adopted the natural area
through the City's Stream Team program.
Park construction began in 1998 with grading and concrete work. The playground was built in
1999, and landscaping and irrigation was installed this year. The playground is unique in several ways.
It was designed for two age groups (2- to 5-year olds, and 5- to 12-year-olds), and it is surfaced with
engineered wood fibers. This material, which was requested by neighbors, compacts enough to allow for

disabled accessibility yet provides the required cushioning to accommodate falls off the play equipment.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541 j 682-5262 • PAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
