~ s I i _
. ~i
December 8, 2000
CONTACT: Robin Hostick, Parks Planner, 682-4915
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PARKS PLANNING WORKSHOP FOCUSES ON GILBERT AND LARK PARKS
Neighbors and organizations in the Bethel area are invited to a parks planning workshop
on Thursday, December 14, at Peterson Barn, 870 Berntzen Road, to discuss improvements to
Gilbert Park and Lark Park. The workshop begins at 6:30 with a discussion on Gilbert Park,
followed by the Lark Park discussion from 7:45 to 9 p.m. In general, participants will have the
opportunity to talk about possible improvements to the parks, establish project goals and
priorities,. and identify key issues and challenges.
Gilbert Park, located on Gilbert Street, is an undeveloped 1/2-acre parcel that includes a
row of mature trees. This park has been in public ownership for many decades. Improvements
will likely include paths, benches, trash receptacles, picnic tables and perhaps some basic play
equipment. The design of Gilbert Park will involve a series of up to three workshops, as well as
a conditional use permit.
Lark Park, located off Coraly Avenue in NEDCO's Field of Dreams development, is a
fairly well-developed 1-acre park with a playground, full basketball court, benches, trash
receptacle, grill, trees and an open play field. The park also contains a community garden run
privately by Food for Lane County, NEDCO and neighborhood volunteers. Likely improvements
could include a new irrigation system, new trees and perhaps other small improvements. Due
to the small scale of changes, staff is planning to hold just one public workshop session to
check-in with the neighborhood, with brief updates scheduled during subsequent Gilbert Park

workshops.
A total of $100,000 in Parks and Open Space bond measure funding is available for the
two parks, with approximately $50,000 budgeted for each park.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
