i

1 ~
s
May 25, 2001
CONTACT: James Ollerenshaw, Environmental Review Project Manager, 682-8604
From Public I formation Section, 682-5523 -
FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE - 2-PAGE FAX
CITY F EUGENE REVIEWS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF ITS ACTIVITIES
The Ci y of Eugene has completed a comprehensive review to determine the potential of
its activities a d practices to affect the environment.
The re iew, conducted by consultants CH2M Hill, identified and assessed 174 separate
activities, with 18 types of potential environmental effects, and 10 types of habitat effects. The
activities wer ranked in several categories, including overall environmental effect, habitat
effects, and p tential to affect chinook salmon. While the review was prompted in part by the
recent listing f Upper Willamette spring chinook salmon as a threatened species under the
Endangered pecies Act, the review was not limited to activities that affect salmon or salmon
habitat, but al o included any activities with the potential to impact the natural environment.
As ex ected, many activities conducted by the City have the potential to affect the
environment, oth positively and negatively. In some cases, activities that have a negative
environmenta effect are conducted to minimize or avoid much greater environmental impacts
that would oc ur if the activity were not conducted --such as the impact from discharges
related to the treatment of sewage. The consultant did not identify any City activities that were
being conduc ed illegally or were not in compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
"In th course of conducting this review, it became obvious to us that the City of Eugene
is a leading unicipality in terms of the high quality of environmental programs and activities,"
said Ken Carll'son, CH2M Hill's project manager. "Just as impressive, however, is the City's
continuing actions to proactively evaluate and improve environmental performance citywide."
iPublic Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
I, Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
