s ~ ~
- ~
June 21, 2001
CONTACT: Michael Robert, Head Gardener, 682-5324
John Moriarty, Forest Management Plan Coordinator, 682-5324
From Public I formation Section, 682-5523
2 PAGE FA -FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VOLUNTE RS TACKLE TRAILS HABITAT AS HENDRICKS PARK P
LAN PRIORITIES
Volunt ers will gather at Hendricks Park on Saturday, June 23, from 9 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. to work n habitat restoration and trail maintenance projects with park staff.
Trail r~pair and habitat restoration are two top priorities of the Hendricks Park Forest
Management lan. A brochure highlighting the priorities in the native forest at Hendricks Park
was mailed th s week to park neighbors in the Laurel Hill Valley and Fairmount neighborhood
groups. The rochure also includes a schedule of summer volunteer activities in the park.
Accor ing to Michael Robert, head gardener at Hendricks Park, the principal focus of
work this year is habitat restoration, trail maintenance, boundary surveying and neighborhood
outreach. "W 're working with a combination of City staff, Looking Glass and Northwest Youth
Corps crews, ~nd community volunteers to make the most of our limited funding for the
management Ian," he said.
Outrea h efforts have focused on park neighbors because of the unique relationship
that has devel~ped over the years between them and the park. "There is a real sense of
responsibility nd concern for the park among the neighbors in the surrounding area," said John
Moriarty, fores management plan coordinator at the park. However, he added that outreach
efforts won't st p there. "It's clear that any successful habitat restoration will require input from

the whole community," he said.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
