The street tree, on Agate near 17th Avenue, is in the same <br /> proximity as, other diseased elms that were removed by Eugene Public Works two summers ago. <br /> PublLC Works staff took samples from this elm and the tree immediately south of it . The <br /> second elm Shows disease symptoms, but the sample has not yet been confirmed positive for the <br /> fungus. Urban forestry technicians are also sampling seven other previously symptomatic elms <br /> between 17`nl and 18th in order to determine the best strategy for slowin the s read of the disease. <br /> g P <br /> Recommended actions include prophylactic fungicide injection, sanitation pruning and trenching <br /> between tree to prevent root graft transmission. <br /> Urba.~ Forestry staff will continue to monitor all the elms on Agate between 15th and 18th <br /> street and welcomes assistance from the public in identifying infected trees. The disease causes <br /> sudden yello ing and wilting of leaves. <br /> Dutch elm disease only affects elm trees, particularly American elms.
