The <br /> Wastewater ivision is believed to be the first public agency in the Northwest to achieve <br /> registration. <br /> The r gistration milestone was reached as the result of an audit by a third-party firm, <br /> National Sani ation Foundation-International Strategic Registrations. The U.S. Environmental <br /> Protection A ncy (EPA) is currently funding a pilot program involving several municipalities to <br /> develop and i element environmental management systems. <br /> "More and more, public agencies are seeing the value of adopting formal environmental <br /> management systems as a means of improving their operations and reducing environmental <br /> impacts," sai Jim Horne, National EMS Program Manager at the EPA. "We hope the <br /> experience o Eugene can serve as a model for other organizations." <br /> Envir nmental management systems provide a framework for organizations to more <br /> effectively m Wage their environmental obligations and move beyond compliance with <br /> applicable st tutes and regulations to improving overall environmental performance.
