is
November 3 , 2001
CONTACT: Dave CoNey, Public Works Maintenance, 682-4836
i
From Public nformation Section, 682-5523
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
AKE STEPS TO KEEP SIDEWALKS FROM BECOMING SLIPPERY
Safe sidewalks are no accident. Particularly during the fall and winter months, property
owners sho Id sweep or shovel their sidewalks to keep them clear of leaves, moss, pine
needles, sn w, ice, and other materials and debris that can make sidewalks slippery and
unsafe.
"Lea es and moss can be very slippery, especially when they're wet," said Dave Colley,
concrete su ervisor for the Eugene Public Works Maintenance Division. "Already this fall we've
had a numb r of complaints from pedestrians about slick sidewalks."
Eug ne Code requires property owners to keep the sidewalks adjacent to their property
maintained n safe condition. That includes removing debris and fixing cracks or heaved
sections th can create tripping hazards.
Don sweep sidewalk debris into the street where it can cause problems for bicyclists or
motor vehic es. Instead, put organic materials in the containers provided through the new yard
debris colle tion program. Clean leaves may be placed in the street if the second round of leaf
collection h snot been completed in that area. Once the second round of collection has been
~I
completed i an area, property owners are responsible for removing leaves from the street.
Duri g snowstorms, shove( sidewalks as soon as possible. If a de-icer is used to
remove ice from sidewalks, be sure to real the label carefully and follow the label's instructions
to avoid ha ming the environment. Do not use a de-icing product such as rock salt that
ii contains c orides. Sand is not a de-icer but it can make ice-covered sidewalks less slippery.
The City of Eugene also works with property owners to identify and correct tripping
hazards. r more information on the city's sidewalk program, call 682-4800, or on the Internet

i
at www.ci. ugene.or.us/pw/sidewalk.
ubllc Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541)682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
