Neighbors and community members from throughout the
city are invit d to help remove English ivy from forested areas of the park as the first
step in eco ystem restoration. Ivy was introduced into
the area as far back as the early 1920s. It grows rapidly and spreads across the forest
floor, sque ing out the native vegetation that is essential for wildlife. With the onset of
seasonal ra ns, we can take advantage of the colder winter months to remove ivy from
the soil bef re native perennial and annual plants emerge in the spring.
This onth's Gaining Ground day is the second of four planned for the winter of
2001 and 2 02. Come join the fun and help restore the native forest in Hendricks Park.
Wear warm layers and rain gear, boots and gloves. We'll provide the tools and snacks.
For ore information on how you can help with this important habitat restoration
project in E gene's oldest city park, or to receive a copy of our guide for landscaping
(more)
