Bicycle Education Classes Take to the Streets

FOR IMM DIATE RELEASE BICYCLE EDUCATION CLASSES TAKE TO THE STREETS Stu ents will practice newly learned bicycling skills at two area middle schools during the next two weeks. Sixth graders at Springfield Middle School and Cal Young Middle Sc ool are learning about bicycling in traffic as part of a two-week class offered by the Bic cle Transportation Alliance of Oregon. The course, conducted during the students' gularly scheduled physical education classes, teaches helmet use and fitting, sig aling, finding the safe and appropriate place to ride on the road, and making left and right turns. The students begin in the classroom, then proceed to parking lots for practic ,then to a nearby street corner, and eventually to two community rides where the apply all the lessons they have learned. Volunteer bicyclists assist with the communit rides. Her 's the Intersection practice schedule: • Spri gfield Middle School, May 14 and 15, 10 to 11 a.m., and 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. i at 1 to Street and F Street. • Cal oung Middle School, May 24 and 28, 9 to 11 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Che I Street and Snelling Drive. The classes are offered by a partnership of the Eugene Bicycle Coalition, the Bicycle Tr nsportation Alliance, the City of Eugene, the Oregon Department of i Transporta ion, PeaceHealth, Lane Transit District's Commuter Solutions program, .
