September , 2002
CONTACT: Neil Bjorklund, Senior Planner, 682-5507
~ From Public information Section, 682-5523
a
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
PROTEC ING WILD SALMON IS FOCUS OF SEPTEMBER 10 WORKSHOP IN EUGENE
i
A pu lic workshop on strategies to protect wild salmon in the Eugene area will be held
I
Tuesday, S ptember 10, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Campbell Senior Center, 155 High Street.
Sat on are an indicator species, and the decline and subsequent listing of wild Chinook

~ salmon as n endangered species in the upper Willamette River is an indication that the local
watershed i in poor health. The workshop is being held by the City of Eugene to provide
information bout wild salmon and their local habitat and to collect public comment on a set of
10 draft pro osed strategies for salmon protection and recovery.
The proposed strategies include establishing a "salmon habitat protection zone" along
the river to rotect riparian vegetation, which provides food and important nutrients, creates
hiding and esting places for juvenile salmon and filters out stormwater pollutants before they
reach the ri er. The proposed salmon habitat protection zone would include a 75-foot
developme t setback and a 45-foot transition zone.
Whi a some of the strategies are property specific, others recognize the general
importance of reducing stormwater pollution and improving habitat. For example, one of the
proposed s rategies is to adopt a list of invasive, non-native plants for the Eugene area and
prohibit us of any of the listed plants in any new landscaping approved by the City.
Ina dition to providing opportunities for public comment, the workshop will feature
videos, ho rly presentations, and displays.
