The event <br /> will be at Amazo Park and Aquatic Center from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and includes food, music and <br /> swimming for vo unteers and their families. Mayor Jim Torrey, City Manager Jim Carlson and Angel <br /> Jones, Director f the Department of Library, Recreation and Cultural Services will offer words of <br /> ;appreciation. In itations have been sent to nearly 2000 volunteers, and 550 are expected to attend. <br /> Each ye r volunteers support City of Eugene activities, performing a wide variety of services. <br /> Many volunteers donate their time by participating in one of over 40 City boards, commissions and <br /> committees. So a volunteers assist with park design, maintenance and planting projects. Some serve <br /> I <br /> ~ as hosts and pr ide information at the Hult Center and other city facilities and events. The Solid Waste <br /> and Recycling P ogram has several volunteers serving as master gardeners and compost specialists. <br /> The Volunteers I Policing Program utilizes volunteers in many areas including Seniors On Patrol, <br /> Neighborhood atch, graffiti tracking, a crime prevention speakers' bureau, and in the Public Safety <br /> Substations. "In these times of tight budgets, volunteers enable us to provide more and better quality <br /> services than w otherwise could. In many areas they offer a special expertise or an extra personal touch <br /> that we can't pro ide with existing staff resources," says City Manager Jim Carlson. "I'm delighted that we <br /> are honoring the a volunteers for the tremendous value they provide to the citizens of Eugene, "added <br /> Mayor Torrey. <br /> City sta who work with the volunteers are also tremendously appreciative of the work they do.
