Eas 26~' Avenue between Willamette and Oak streets will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 <br /> p.m. forth event, which, in addition to the "Trees for Concrete" project, also includes Mayor <br /> ~ Torrey a pting Eugene's 24"' Tree City USA award. Tree City USA, a program of the National <br /> I <br /> Arbor Day oundation and sponsored by the Oregon Department of Forestry, recognizes cities <br /> ~ that have eveloped programs that plant and care for trees. <br /> A or Day is America's national tree holiday, a day set aside to plant ceremonial trees, <br /> educate c ildren about the importance of trees and honor the important role trees play in the daily <br /> lives of pe ple in communities across the country. This project was selected to commemorate <br /> Arbor Da this year because the purpose of Trees for Concrete so closely matches the mission of <br /> Arbor Da .The Trees for Concrete program creates more livable and green downtown <br /> environm nts by excavating planting spaces and planting trees and flowers in portions of concrete <br /> sidewalk in Eugene's urban core. This project was made possihle through NelghborWoods' <br /> collabora ion with Eugene Tree Foundation, area businesses, property owners, and residents. <br /> Funded in 1872, Arbor Day is now celebrated in all 50 states. Oregonians celebrate <br /> Arbor W ek the first full week in April.
