_i <br /> <br /> --j - ~ o ~ > <br /> May 16, 2003 <br /> CONTACT: lane Bishop, Bicycle & Alternative Modes Coordinator, 682-5471 <br /> ason Agar, Bicycle Education Coordinator, 338-2966 <br /> From Public In ormation Section, 682-5523 <br /> I <br /> FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE <br /> BICYCLE EDUCATION CLASSES TAKE TO THE STREETS <br /> Sixth raders at Monroe Middle School will practice newly learned bicycling skills during <br /> the week of ay 19. <br /> The s dents are learning about bicycling in traffic in a two-week class offered by the <br /> Bicycle Tran ortation Alliance of Oregon. The course, conducted during the students' regularly <br /> scheduled ph sical education classes, teaches helmet use and fitting, signaling, finding the safe <br /> and appropri to place to ride on the road, and making left and right turns. The students begin in <br /> ~ the classroo ,proceed to parking lots for practice, then to a nearby street corner, and <br /> ~ eventually to two community rides where they apply the lessons they have learned. Volunteer <br /> bicyclists as ist with the community rides. <br /> The onroe Middle School students will practice at the intersection of Ascot and <br /> ~irwood on ay 20 and 21, at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. Their community rides are <br /> scheduled f r May 22 and 23, at the same times, leaving from the school.
