- a v v
June 19, 20 3
CONTACT: Michelle Cahill, Project Manager, 682-6855
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
ne Block of Broadway to be Closed for Three Days for Brick Repairs
A on -block section of Broadway will be closed for three days beginning Sunday, June
22, to allow he repair of brickwork in the vicinity of the Broadway Plaza.
Broa way will be closed between Oak and Willamette streets beginning early Sunday

I~I morning. T e Eugene Public Works Department, which is inspecting the repair work, expects to
have the str et reopened by Wednesday, June 25. Minor repair work will also be done in the
block betwe n Willamette and Charnelton, but the street will remain open although motorists
may encoun er occasional brief delays.
Broa way Plaza, at the intersection of Broadway and Willamette, was paved with a
decorative b ick pattern when Willamette Street was opened in 1996. The brickwork was
retained and expanded when Broadway was opened in 2002. Some of the bricks have come
loose in the avel lanes, and the repairs will help stabilize the surface and ensure a long and
attractive pa ing life for Broadway, which is designed as downtown's "great street."

~ Cost f the brick repairs is being shared by Eugene Sand & Gravel as the general
contractor o the Broadway opening project and the City of Eugene. The City considered

~ leaving one I ne open during construction but determined that closing the one-block section for
several days would allow the repair work to be done quicker and with less disruption to

III neighboring usinesses.
For re information about road projects in the Eugene area, call the City of Eugene

i traffic relief h tline at 984-8484, or on the web at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw/traffic.

~~I
Publ c Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541 j 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
