08 07/03 THU 23.37 FAX 541 682 4882 EUGENE PW MNTNC & P05 PW ADMIN ~ 001
rdr ; rO`: ~
August 7, 2 03
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT:II
¦ The ese Picado, Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist, 682-4814 or 682-
480
¦ Rich rd Zucker, Supervisor, Park Amenities, 682-4833 or 953-9463 (cell)
~ BETHEL N IGHBORHOOD PARK GETS NEW PLAYGROUND, TURF
I~ Nei~hbors along Coraly Avenue in Bethel can now gather at their neighborhood park
and enjoy a new playground, turf, landscaped beds, and picnic area complete with new benches
and a barb que. Lark Park, located north of Roosevelt Boulevard and west of Maple Street,
was origina ly slated for a new irrigation system only funded by the 1998 bond measure, but,
thanks to P blic Works Parks and Open Space and Maintenance crews, a more extensive
renovation as undertaken in-house. The irrigation system, picnic area, and fence were
installed la winter, the landscape work was performed this spring and early summer, and, just
recently, th renovation of the play area was completed.
The play area is now bigger, better and more wheelchair-accessible. After a month of
work, the p rk is sporting several, newly refurbished amenities. The enlarged play structure now
includes a spring rider, tot swing, climbing area, and slide. Instead of sand or bark chips, park
patrons will notice small, square, wood tiles surrounding the play area. These specially
engineered tiles are designed to create a layered ground covering that is hard enough to allow
wheelchair to enter the area and maneuver over the surface, but soft enough to cushion playful
feet. In ad ition, both basketball backboards were reinstalled after being sandblasted and
powder-co~'ted.
"Wh~le we were working, there were always kids watching, eager to start using the new
play equip ent," says Richard Zucker, Park Amenities Supervisor. "We look forward to seeing
the commu ity benefit from this park.° Two new picnic tables should also arrive by the end of
the month. For more information about Lark Park improvements, call 682-4800.
~'I
i
I,
