The Fire
Department ill use it as a training opportunity to practice wildland firefighting methods. The
Public Work Department will use the fire as a restoration tool.
Hist rically, prairies in the Willamette Valley were burned frequently by Native
Americans. By reintroducing this ecological process, Park and Open Space staff hope to
reduce wee y exotic species, remove built-up thatch, and provide an opportunity to reseed the
area with n tive prairie species.
NOTE TO SSIGNMENT EDITORS: PLEASE CONTACT GLEN POTTER AT 682-7118 OR
ERIC JON SAT 682-5523 IF YOU PLAN TO SEND A REPORTER OR PHOTOGRAPHER
TO THE C NTROLLED BURN.
