The work is being done by the striping crew from <br /> the Eugene Public Works Department. <br /> The restriped portion of 28tH Avenue will include afive-foot-wide bicycle lane on each <br /> side of the treet, two 10-foot-wide vehicle travel lanes, and approximately 40 parking spaces <br /> on the sout side of the street. West 28tH Avenue is classified as a minor arterial and is used by <br /> about 10,0 0 vehicles per day. While the new travel lanes are narrower than before, they are <br /> compatible ith the posted 25 mph speed limit on that section of West 28tH <br /> ; The project has been in the Eugene Bikeway Master Plan since 1975 and completes a <br /> two-mile to g, on-street, east-west cycling route from 28tH and Chambers to 30tH and Hilyard. <br /> Recognize nationally as abicycle-friendly community, Eugene has almost 70 miles of striped <br /> on-street bi a lanes and approximately 30 miles of off-street bicycle-pedestrian paths. <br /> ~ "I've received numerous requests from residents in the area in the last few years to get <br /> this implem nted," said Diane Bishop, the City of Eugene's bicycle and pedestrian coordinator. <br /> "One moth r bicycles with her young son to elementary school each day along 28tH Avenue, and <br /> she has be n anxiously awaiting its completion." <br /> Ina dition to the people who cycle in south Eugene, the project has the support of the <br /> local neigh orhood group. <br /> "Th redesign of 28th Avenue connects 28th to the neighborhood by fully utilizing the <br /> street, crea ing space for walking, bicycling, driving, and parking," said Nancy Ellen Locke, a <br /> member of he Friendly Area Neighbors executive board. <br /> For ore information about the project or for a free map showing Eugene area <br /> bikeways, c ntact the City of Eugene Alternative Modes•Pr/ogram at 682-5291. <br /> V <br /> <br /> ~rr <br /> Pujblic Works • Administration • Ciry of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401 <br /> Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us <br /> <br />
