When <br /> construction s completed in fall 2004, the 95-year-old station at the north end of Willamette <br /> Street will se a as a multi-modal transportation facility, accommodating train passengers, <br /> motorists, b s users, bicyclists and pedestrians. <br /> ~ The 4.5 million rehabilitation project has been several years in the making. Preliminary <br /> steps includ d arranging federal and Amtrak funding with the support of U.S. Congressman <br /> Peter DeFa io, bringing into public ownership the depot and the property on which it stands, <br /> and complet ng a master plan for the depot that is consistent with the City Council-approved <br /> vision forth north end of downtown. <br /> The orris P. Kielty company of Eugene is serving as general contractor on the <br /> ~ rehabilitatio of the depot building, with architectural services provided by WBGS Architecture & <br /> ~ Planning, P , of Eugene. <br /> In th first phase of construction, a modular structure will be installed to the west of the <br /> existing de t to house Amtrak's passenger rail and baggage operations while the main <br /> ~ renovation ork is being done. Aiso in the first phase, a small bunkhouse built around 1890 and <br /> moved sev ral times over the years will be relocated to the westerly end of the property. <br /> ' In D cember 2003, the schedule calls for the depot building to be fenced off so <br /> rehabilitatio work can begin. First, asbestos-containing materials will be removed from the <br /> i depot, folio ed by extensive repair to the interior and exterior of the building. <br /> Onc the rehabilitation work is finished and Amtrak is moved back into the depot <br /> building, su sequent tasks include rehabilitating the historic bunkhouse, improving site surface <br /> drainage, i proving pedestrian and vehicular circulation, and providing plantings and pedestrian <br /> amenities. he schedule calls for all work to be completed by the end of 2004. <br /> Dur ng construction, Amtrak will offer all services, including passenger rail and Thruway <br /> <br /> i <br /> bus servic ,ticket sales and baggage handling. Onsite parking will be limited at times but <br /> numerous aid parking spaces are available in the general area.
