> o v

~ October 30, 2003
CONTACT: Rich Heil, Project Manager, 682-8307
From Publi Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
Rep it Work Under Way to Correct `Spaghetti Network' of Wastewater Lines
Wor is under way in several Eugene neighborhoods to correct problems associated
with a "spa hetti network" of antiquated, underground sewer lines.
Eug ne Sand & Gravel, under contract to the Eugene Public Works Department, is
installing n w wastewater service lines to properties that currently are connected to the sewer
system by I ng private lines. In many cases, these long lines are made of obsolete materials
such as ter a cotta and rolled tar paper. They also tend to cross other people's property or
j wander thr ugh the public right-of-way, creating maintenance and legal access issues.
i
Abo t 1,300 properties in Eugene are served by these indirect or "spaghetti network"
wastewate lines. The City has developed a program to replace many of these lines over the
next sever I years. This year's project will improve service to approximately 40 properties.
~ Co struction to re lace substandard wastewater service lines is substantial) com leted
j P Y P
on Blair Str et from Fourth to Fifth avenues, and work is currently under way in the vicinity of
12th Avenu and High Street. The project will then shift to Hilyard Street between 14th and 20th
avenues fo the six to eight weeks, with final cleanup scheduled in late December.
Th construction includes excavating the street to expose the wastewater system,
j
installing n w sewer lines and fittings, and patching the street when the underground work is
completed. Motorists should watch for flaggers, lane closures and detours in work zones.
For up-to-date information about work in specific areas, call the Eugene traffic relief
hotline at 84-8484, or on the Internet at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw/traffic.
~J
ubltc Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
