December 31, 2003
CONTAC Eric Johnson, Acting Public Works Maintenance Director, 682-4800

~ From Publi Information Section, 682-5523 or 682-4800

~ FOR IMM DIATE RELEASE
Take Steps to Keep Sidewalks from Becoming Slippery
Un xpected weather can cause many hazards, including slippery sidewalks. To ensure
pedestrian afety, we are urging property owners to maintain the sidewalks adjacent to their
homes ins fe condition, as required by Eugene Code. During snowstorms, shovel sidewalks
as soon as possible. If a de-icer is used to remove ice from sidewalks, be sure to read the label
carefully a d follow the label's instructions to avoid harming the environment. De-icing products

I
that contai chlorides, such as rock salt, are harmful to the environment. Sand, which is not a
de-icer, ca help make ice-covered sidewalks less slippery.
On the snow and icy weather conditions have ceased, property owners are asked to
help clean ny sand which may have been pushed onto the sidewalk as soon as practical.
Please do of sweep sidewalk debris into the street where it can cause problems for bicyclists
or motor ve icles, or pollute local waterways. Residents are urged to use caution when walking,
driving or bi ycling on sanded roads, bike paths, sidewalks and pedestrian paths until the sand
has been r moved.
For ore information on the city's ice/snow removal program, please call 682-4800 or

~ find it on int rnet at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw/icesnow.

i

I
Pu lic Works • Administration • City of Eugene •858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
