i
-
January 5, 004, 8:45 a.m.
~I CONTACT Jeff Lankston, Public Works Maintenance Director, 682-4800
From Publi Information Section, 682-5523 or 682-4800
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
'I Ice/Snow Emergency Parking Ban Goes Back Into Effect
The City of Eugene has declared an ice/snow emergency, effective at 8:45 a.m. today,
Monday, J nuary 5. The emergency declaration means all vehicles must be removed
immediate) from designated snow emergency routes.
Th city's ice/snow ordinance prohibits parking along streets designated as snow
emergenc routes while asnow/ice emergency is in effect. Typically, emergency routes are
'1 collectors, rterials, and bus routes. The highest-priority routes include Chambers Street, River
Road, the erry Street Bridge and Coburg Road, Franklin Boulevard, Sixth and Seventh
avenues, a d Highway 99 North. Details on other emergency routes can be found on the

~ ~ Internet at .ci.eugene.or.us/pw/icesnow.
"Ri ht now we are in full sanding mode," said Public Works Maintenance Director Jeff
~ Lankston. `In terms of being slippery, the streets are probably the worst they've been this
~'i winter."
Th ice/snow emergency ordinance gives the City the authority to tow vehicles parked or
stranded a ong emergency routes. By banning parking, the City is able to ensure that
emergenc vehicles, buses, and other essential traffic can move safely around town, and that
parked an stalled vehicles do not hamper snow removal operation.
i
Eu ene declared a snow emergency on January 1, after more than six inches of snow
f were dum ed on the city. That ban was lifted Sunday morning, January 4, but freezing
temperatu s combined with snow and ice led to a decision to reinstitute the emergency parking
ban this m rning.
Th parking ban will remain in effect until the Public Works Department determines that
the emerg ncy conditions have ceased. Listen to local radio and television stations for regular
j updates, o call the Public Works Maintenance Division at 682-4800.
P blic Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 ~ www.ci.eugene.or.us
