The City of Eugene NeighborWaods program and their local
tree planting partner, Eugene Tree Foundation, who will coordinate the effort on Saturday,
identified the site as an area that needs trees last year and contacted local Boy Scout troop
#177 about the project.
"NeighborWoods would like to thank Eugene Tree Foundation and local Boy Scout
Troop #177 for helping get Willamette Valley native species planted in an area that was lacking
trees,° says Rick Olkowski, NeighborWoods program coordinator.
Other interested volunteers are welcome to join the boy scouts in their community
service project. The project involves digging planting holes; planting big leaf maple, cascara,
white oak, blade oak, Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and Oregon ash trees, all native to the area;
and applying leaf mulch to the tree islands. The planting will cover a 200-foot area. Tools,
equipment and refreshments will be provided. For more information about this and other
upcoming tree planting projects, call 682-4831.
