Picado, Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist, 682-4814 or <br /> 682-4 00, therese.m.picado(a~ci.eugene.or.us <br /> FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE <br /> SHOW HEN RICKS PARK HOW MUCH YOU LOVE IT BY HELPING WITH THE WEEDING <br /> Com lend a hand this Valentine's Day and help weed the Hendricks Park forest at the <br /> last of winter olunteer work days this Saturday, February 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rain or <br /> shine, volunt ers will continue to help rid the forest floor of English ivy and control the spread of <br /> Herb Robert commonly referred to as "Stinky Bob," from park roadsides and trails. Interested <br /> volunteers a e asked to meet at the F.M. Wilkins Shelter on Summit Avenue at 9:30 a.m. to <br /> enjoy pastri s, coffee and juice courtesy of the Eugene City Bakery and the Friends of <br /> Hendricks rk before heading to the forest and trails. <br /> Volu tears will be instructed in techniques for removing non-native, invasive plants while <br /> protecting t e native plants of the forest. Ridding the forest of invasive weeds is one of the main <br /> objectives f the Hendricks Park Forest Management Plan. By removing the ivy and other <br /> invasive pl nts, the native species have a better opportunity to reproduce and flourish in the <br /> forest. Ov r the past two years, volunteers, contractors and park staff have cleared ivy from <br /> about 10 a res of the park's forest. Following up with removal of re-sprouted roots through <br /> these sub uent volunteer work parties is essential for maintaining the cleared areas. <br /> To Is and equipment will be provided, and work clothes, rain gear and shoes, such as <br /> long-sleev d shirts, long pants and sturdy shoes or boots, are recommended.
