Encounter magnolias, <br /> rhodadendro sand native flora on walking tours of the renowned rhododendron garden and <br /> native plant g rden at the park on March 28 and May 2. Roger Gossler, owner of Gossler Farms <br /> Nursery and ationally known magnolia expert, will lead a tour of the magnolias in the <br /> rhododendro garden, considered one of the best collections in the northwest, on Sunday, <br /> March 28, at 1 p.m; Michael Robert, recently retired head gardener at Hendricks Park, will lead <br /> a tour of the ododendron garden on Sunday, May 2, at 1 p.m; and Ginny Alfriend, Hendricks <br /> Park garden rand resident native plant expert, will lead tours of the native plant garden on both <br /> days at 11 a m. All tours begin at the F. M. Wilkins Shelter at 2200 Summit Avenue and fast <br /> about an ho r. <br /> Mich el Robert, who has witnessed spring unfold at the park for over 20 years, <br /> describes it ike this: "The canopy of magnolias, crowning over the rhododendrons, appears as <br /> a cloud of p stets, and the early rhododendrons add to a circus of color, in conjunction with the <br /> many bulbs and pare nials on the ground. The Native Plant Garden is also in full bloom with <br /> hosts of trill urns, irise and western Solomon's seal." <br /> Stu y waikin shoes are recommended. The wildflower tour travels through the area <br /> around the halter an into an area of the forest that was recently cleared of ivy on gravel or <br /> wood chip aths. Thal rhododendron tour walks through the hillside garden on groomed gravel <br /> paths that re largely accessible to people using wheelchairs. Pets are not allowed. <br /> Pa ing is limited at the park; alternative transportation is strongly encouraged. To visit <br /> the park b bus, take the #27 Fairmount route to Walnut and 17~', walk south to Fairmount, and <br /> continue o e block, then turn east on Summit and walk up to the top of the hilt where you will <br /> see the W kips shelter.
