At LATE, Dr. Homey conducts research <br /> and develop ent projects related to the uses of technology in education. His current work is <br /> focused in tw areas. The first involves evaluating the effectiveness of computer-based study <br /> strategies in 'ddle and high schools. These strategies help students use generic software to better <br /> accomplish y-to-day learning tasks such as gathering and synthesizing information from <br /> textbooks, w bsites and lectures. Additionally, Horsey is a nationally recognized expert in the <br /> development nd evaluation of digital books and electronic reading environments. This work <br /> explores how students can be assisted in conducting scientific inquiry using data and original source <br /> documents tare accessed and enhanced via the Internet. In addition to his work at CATS, Dr. <br /> Hornet' teac s technology courses in the UO's Elementary and Secondary Teacher Education <br /> Program. <br /> We wish to h nor Homey for the passion he brings to the new West Eugene Wetlands education <br /> center proje For the last three years, he has devoted extensive time and energy getting to know <br /> the wetland a osystem as well as finding the nexus for a CATE, UO and West Eugene Wetlands <br /> Partnership c nnection. He and his staff have spent numerous hours developing grant proposals, <br /> program pro pectus, shooting and documenting over 5,000 photographs and creating a prototype <br /> digital field p to the West Eugene Wetlands. He has done all of this as a volunteer. <br /> Doug Broo e <br /> Doug Brook is the environmental team leader for Hynix Semiconductor in west Eugene. In this <br /> position, fox a last three years, he has managed wetland restoration projects and the on-site <br /> stormwater off system. As a manager o£ wetland habitats, he has worked to enhance the quality <br /> of wetland p nt communities on a 27-acre wetland mitigation site. The wetland mitigation project, <br /> which began ' 1996, has now been certified as completed by the Department of State Lands and <br /> Army Corps f Engineers. Brooke has also tackled, with evident success, questions of how to <br /> reduce the a undance of invasive non-native plants and animals that have negative impacts on <br /> wetland and quatic habitats. He also oversees the operations of the stormwater drainage system to <br /> m;n;m;tie a erse effects of developed surfaces, both in terms of water quality and seasonality of <br /> flows, on do stream wetlands and riparian areas. As a result of Brooke's efforts and his <br /> collaborator lands in Hynix ownership that are protected under the West Eugene Wetlands Plan <br /> are being ac ely managed for native plant communities, wildlife habitat, and water quality benefits, <br /> which are go is that axe shared with the West Eugene Wetlands Partnership. <br /> s <br /> Ethers Per ns <br /> Ethers Per ' s is a botanist and consultant specializing in ecological restoration and botanical <br /> 4 inventory. rkins has been working as a consultant in Eugene since 1992 and has been involved in <br /> ~.I the 27-acre ynix wetland mitigation project since 1996. Before the restoration project even started, <br /> Perkins wor ed to influence the project design to better reflect the open prairie conditions <br /> <br />
