Edison Elementary Third-Graders Play Salmon for a Day
j ids learn Important Lessons about Salmon Ecology and Migration
i
On onday, June 7, Edison School third grade students will take on the role of adult
Chinook sal on migrating upstream to spawn. Edison School is located at 1328 E. 22nd Street
in Eugene.
Usin their sense of smell, kids will identify their home streams and then sniff their way
through a m ze of streams set up in the classroom. The trip won't be easy as they encounter
physical ob tacles and polluted waterways. The activity is part of the SPLASH! curriculum
developed y the City of Eugene Stormwater Management program to help children learn about
salmon ecol gy and the harmful effects of stormwater pollution. The lesson coincides with the
i spring chin ok salmon migration up the McKenzie River.
In M rch 1999, the spring Chinook salmon in the upper Willamette River basin was listed
as a threate ed species under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). Salmon, especially
juvenile sal on, are found in the Willamette River and in several local tributary streams,
including S ring Creek, Delta Ponds, Patterson Slough, the Canoe Canal and the lower portion
of Augusta reek. The Willamette River and its salmon-bearing tributaries provide feeding and
hiding plac s for juvenile salmon that are heading downstream toward the ocean.
The ity of Eugene Stormwater Management program provides public education about
water qualit to local businesses and citizens. In addition to the salmon curriculum, the program
includes a lean Water Business educational partnership with local cleaning businesses that

5
have pledg d to follow practices designed to prevent stormwater pollution and improve water
quality. The program also publishes Stormwater Connections, a biannual newsletter that
reaches mo a than 65,000 Eugene residents.
Mor information about the salmon curriculum and the stormwater education program
can be foun on the Internet at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw/storm.
Publi Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
