Picado, Packs and Open Space Public Infomnaticm Specialist, 682-4814 or 682-4800
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Help Control the Spread of Invasive Weeds at Hendricks Park
Enjoy the ambience of the oaks and firs of the Hendricks Park forest while pulling invasive weeds
next Saturday, July 24, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. This effort will pron-rote the regeneration of wildflowers by
helping control the spread of herb Robert and nipplewort, two inva~~ive, non-native weeds, from roadsides
and trails. As a bonus at the end of the workk party, volunteers will Ftiave the opportunity to sow native camas
seed, both in the park's native plant nursery and the oak knoll are~~. Interested volunteers are asked to meet
at the F.M. Wilkins Shelter at 2200 Summit Avenue at 9:30 a.m. to enjoy pastries, coffee and juice courtesy
of the Eugene City Bakery and the Friends of Hendricks Park before heading to the forest and trails.
Volunteers will be instructed in techniques for removing non-native, invasive plants while protecting
the native plants of the forest. Ridding the forest of invasive weeds is one of the main objectives of the
Hendricks Paris Forest Management Plan. By removing the ivy and other invasive plants, the native species
have a better opportunity to reproduce and flourish in the forest, Over the past three years, volunteers,
contractors and park staff have cleared ivy from about 16 acres of the park's forest. Following up with
removal of secondary invasive plants, such as Herb Robert and itippiewort, is essential for maintaining the
work that has been accomplished.
Tools and equipment will be provided, and long-sleeved :shirts, long pants and sturdy shoes or boots
are recommended. For more information, call 682-5324, 607-4iA36 or visit www.friendsofhendridcspark.org.
