- > > .'a
September 3, 2004
CONTACT: Tom Larsen, Traffic Engineer, 682-4959
Teri Higgins, Project Manager, 682-8462
From Publi Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
Willa ette Street from 13"'to 18~'to be Converted to Two-Way Traffic on Friday
A fiv -block section of Willamette Street in central Eugene will be converted to two-way
operation o Friday, September 24.
The conversion of Willamette Street to a two-way street between 13`h and 18th avenues
follows mor than a month's work of paving repairs between 13"' and 19th avenues. Earlier this
week, crew from Eugene Sand & Gravel completed the final paving and restriped the newly
paved stre t to include an traffic travel lane in each direction north of 18th Avenue, onstreet
bicycle Ian s between 13th and 17th avenues, and parking spaces. The project also includes
improveme is in lighting, traffic signals and pedestrian crossings. The majority of funding for
the $600,0 0 pavement preservation project came from Eugene's local fuel tax.
The final step in the two-way conversion is activating new signals on Willamette Street at
13th and 18 h avenues. That work is scheduled to be done by Friday afternoon.
Co erting this section of Willamette Street from one-way to two-way traffic follows a
recommen ation in the City's Central Area Transportation Study approved by the City Council in
May. A two block section of Willamette Street between 18th and 20`h avenues remains one-way
southboun .The Council directed the City staff to hold off on converting that section, to do more
analysis on potential neighborhood impacts and to return to Council with a recommendation.
Alt ugh paving and traffic conversion project on Willamette Street is substantially
completed, motorists may occasionally encounter lane detours and brief delays until all the work
is finished. Motorists should watch for new signs and signals directing traffic in the area of the
newly con rted section of Willamette. Due to space constraints in the intersection of 18th and

Willamette ,left turns will not be allowed from eastbound 18th Avenue to northbound Willamette
Street.
For updates on this and other area road projects, call the City of Eugene's metro area

roadwork otline at 984-8484, or on the Internet at www.ci.eugene.or.us/pw/traffic.
Publ c Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (54f j 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
