Picado, Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist, 682-4814 or 682-4800 ~ R IMMEDIATE RELEASE Heip Control the Spread of Invasive Weeds at Hendricks Park Roll up your sleeves and join the effort to help prevent the spread of English ivy and other non-native I inf vasive plants this Saturday, January 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Co-sponsored by the City of Eugene, H ndriccs Park and the Friends of Hendricks Park, the volunteer work day is part of the ongoing effort to ntrol invasive species in the park's forest. Interested volunteers are asked to meet at the F.M. Wilkins i alter at 2200 Summit Avenue at 9:30 a.m. to enjoy pastries, coffee and juice courtesy of the Eugene City akery and the. Friends of Hendricks Park before heading to the forest and trails. Volunteers will be instructed in techniques for removing non-native, invasive plants while protecting t e native plants of the forest. Controlling the spread of invasive weeds in the forest is one of the main bjectives of the Hendricks Park Forest Management Plan. By removing invasive plants, the native species ave a better opportunity to reproduce and flourish in the forest. Over the past three years, volunteers, ntractors and park staff have cearetl ivy from about 16 acres of the park's forest. Following up with moval of secondary invasive plants, such as Herb Robert and nipplewort, is essential for maintaining the ork that has been accomplished. Tools and equipment will be provided, and long-sleeved shirts, long pants and sturdy, non-slipping hoes or boots are recommended.
