The young volunteers will~devote
their entire school day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to hard physical labor at Morse Ranch Park in their
neighborhood. Projects include painting and repairing fences and planting willows at the off-leash dog park
and pulling ivy from the base of trees in the forested area of the park. Supervised by teachers, parent
volunteers, and parks staff, the students are performing this week of service as part of their year-long
curriculum of community service and experiential learning in the outdoors.
"An integral component of the Montessori system of teaming involves connecting with the land and
earth and using the whole body," says Jennifer Wyld, middle school teacher at Ridgeline Montessori School.
"Working in our parks represents an urban opportunity to work outside and contribute to the community."
Volunteers in Parks Coordinator Matt McRae says that the students' substantial commitment of time and
energy will make a noticeable difference at Morse Ranch Park.
The Volunteers in Parks program supports citizen involvement in activities such as park
beautification, litter control, trail development and maintenance, weeding, and other special projects in
Eugene's parks.
