The beds v~ill be used to cultivate plants for the ash forest just east of
Stewart Pond, the site that the church group adopted through SUeam Team fast spring. The nursery,
where Saturday's work party will take place, is located at the east end of Alton Baker Park just behind
the new Alton Baker Community Gardens off of Day Island Road, and the natural area that the group
adopted is located in Bertelsen Nature Park in the West Eugene Wetlands.
"The adoption group, which calls themselves the Creation Care Committee/Riparian Redeemers,
are using the native plant nursery to do the full circle of restoration--collecting seeds and taking
cuttings, growing them out at the nursery and replanting them in a natural area," says Loma Baldwin,
coordinator of Stream Team.
The original Native Plant Nursery located near the wastewater treatment plant is overflowing with
stock. The new nursery, like its sister nursery near the City's Wastewater Plant, will be volunteer-run
and produce native plants for natural areas such as Stewart Pond all over the city. Stream Team
provides educational and volunteer opportunities for members of the community, from elementary-age
children to college students to older adults, to team about and care for the city's waterways and natural
areas. For more information about this and other Stream Team projects and trainings, call 682-4850.
