Picado, Parks and Open Space Public Information Specialist, 682-4814 or 682-4800 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Help Control the Spread of Invasive Weeds at Hendricks Park Roll up your sleeves and join the effort to help prevent the spread of English ivy and other non-native invasive plants this Saturday, February 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Co-sponsored by the City of Eugene a'~d the Friends of Hendricks Park, the volunteer work day is part of the ongoing effort to control invasive ~h species in the park's forest. Interested volunteers are asked to meet at the F.M. Wilkins Shelter at 2200 S~umMit Avenue at 9:30 a.m. to enjoy pastries, coffee and juice courtesy of the Eugene City Bakery and the ~rier}ds of Hendricks Park before heading to the forest and trails. Volunteers will be instructed in techniques for removing non-native, invasive plants while protecting ~ t~e native plants of the forest. ControNing the spread of invasive weeds in the forest is one of the main gbjedtives of the Hendricks Park Forest Management Plan. By removing invasive plants, the native species have a better opportunity to reproduce and flourish in the forest. Over the past three years, volunteers, ~ntractors and park staff have cleared ivy from about 16 acres of the park's forest. Following up with ri~mOval of secondary invasive plants, such as Herb Robert and nipplewort, is essential for maintaining the v~ork that has been accomplished. Tools and equipment will be provided, and long-sleeved shirts, long pants and sturdy, non-slipping rho@s or boots are recommended.
