Ginny Alfriend, head gardener at Hendricks Park, is predicting a very short, but potentially
~pectacutar, bloom season if the warm, dry weather continues. "Early, mid and late season plants may all
doom simultaneously! So, don't miss the show -come early," says Aifriend. "The garden, despite the odd
year, is full of life, birds and flowers, and a lovely, tranquil place to visit." Parks staff are watering regularly
~Iready to help extend the bloom season and keep the plants healthy.
Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The wildflower tour travels through the area around the
~~shelter~and into an area of the forest that was recently cleared of ivy on gravel or wood chip paths. The
~-magnolia and rhododendron tours wind through the hillside garden on gravel paths that may be too steep in
places for manual wheelchairs. Pets are not allowed.
Parking is limited at the park; alternative transportation is strongly encouraged. To visit the park by
bus, take the #27 Fairmount route to Walnut and 17~', walk south to Fairmount, and continue one block,
then turn east on Summit and walk up to the top of the hill where you wilt see the Wilkins shelter. For more
