Encounter iris, trillium, camas, dogwood, and other <br /> naive flora on Sunday, April 3, at 1 p.m. Ginny Alfriend, Hendricks Park gardener and resident native plant <br /> expert, leads a tour of the native plant garden, which features native trees, shrubs and perennials of the <br /> ~oikJth~m Willamette Valley. The tour begins at the F. M. Wilkins Shelter at 2200 Summit Avenue and lasts <br /> grout an hour. <br /> Ginny Alfriend, head gardener at Hendricks Park, is predicting a very short, but potentially <br /> ls~ectaacular, bloom season if the warm, dry weather continues. °Early, mid and late season plants may all <br /> bl~orn simultaneouslyl So, don't miss the show-come early," says Alfriend. "The garden, despite the odd <br /> ;year, is full of I'rfe, birds and flowers, and a lovely, tranquil place to visit." Parks staff are watering regularly <br /> i already to help extend the bloom season and keep the plants healthy. <br /> Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The wildflower tour travels through the area around the <br /> s~eltier and into an area of the forest that was recently Geared of ivy on gravel or wood chip paths. Pets are <br /> riot allowed. <br /> Future garden tours include a tour of the rhododendron tour on Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. and <br /> ~not~er tour of the native plant garden on Wednesday evening, May 4, at 6 p.m. <br /> Parking is limited at the park; alternative transportation is strongly encouraged. 7o visit the park by <br /> bus, take the #27 Fairmount route to Walnut and 17~', walk south to Fairmount, and continue one block, <br /> then turn east on Summit and walk up to the top of the hill where you will see the Wilkins shelter.
