i
April 1, 2005
CONTACT: Michelle Cahill, Principal Engineer, 541-682-6855
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Meetings Slated April 5 and April 7 on River Avenue Improvement Project
Proposed improvements to River Avenue between River Road and Beltline will be the
subject of two public meetings next week. The Eugene Public Works Department will hold the
meetings on Tuesday, April 5, and Thursday, April 7. Both meetings are at the Wastewater
Treatment Plant, 410 River Avenue, and run from 5 to 7 p.m., with a presentation at 5:30 p.m.
The information provided at each meeting will be similar.
The meetings are intended to allow local residents, property owners and others who use
River Avenue to learn more about the design, estimated costs and proposed construction
schedule for the street improvement project.
The design for the River Avenue improvements includes reconstructing the street with
curb and gutter, paving it with asphalt, including bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of
the street, and installing pedestrian refuge islands, streetlights and street trees.
Based on the low construction bid submitted by Delta Sand 8 Gravel, total estimated
cost of the project is $2.27 million, a little less than half of which would be assessed to abutting
property owners.
The project has been identified for almost 20 years as a necessary improvement to the
street network in the metropolitan area. The Eugene City Council and the Lane County Board
of Commissioners have discussed the project several times in the past year, and the Eugene
City Council has scheduled a public hearing April 11 on forming a local improvement district to
identify property owners who would pay assessments to help pay for the project. Action on the
formation of the local improvement district is scheduled for the Eugene City Council on April 20.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541} 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
