Picado, Public Information Specialist, Parks and Open Space, 682-4814/682-4800
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tour of Native Plant Garden at Hendricks Park Aprli 3
Spring is here and Hendricks Park is in bloom. Encounter trillium, trout lilies, delphinium, sidalcea,
and other native flora on Sunday, April 3, at 1 p.m. Ginny Atfriend, Hendricks Park head gardener and
resident native plant expert, leads a tour of the native plant garden, which features native trees, shrubs and
perennials of the southern Willamette Valley. The tour begins at the F. M. Wilkins Shelter at 2200 Summit
Avenue and lasts about an hour.
Atfriend is predicting a very short, but potentially spectacular, bloom season. "Early, mid and late
season plants may all bloom simultaneously! So, don't miss the show -come early," she says. "The garden,
despite the odd year, is full of life, birds and flowers, and a lovely, tranquil place to visit." According to
Atfriend, the cooler temperatures and rain may help extend the season and keep the blossoms fresh.
Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The wildflower tour travels through the area around the
shelter and into an area of the forest that was recently cleared of ivy on gravel or wood chip paths. Pets are
not allowed.
Future garden tours include a tour of the rhododendron tour on Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. and
another tour of the native plant garden on Wednesday evening, May 4, at 6 p.m.
Parking is limited at the park; alternative transportation is strongly encouraged. To visit the park by
bus, take the #27 Fairmount route to Walnut and 17~', walk south to Fairmount, and continue one block,
then turn east on Summit and walk up to the top of the hill where you will see the Wilkins shelter. For more
information or special accessibility accommodations, call 682-5324.
