~ ~ ~.1 Y ~f~ <br /> NEWS RELEASE <br /> February 13, 2006 <br /> CONTACT: Jeff Krueger, Lane Council of Governments, 541-682-4122 <br /> Niel Laudati, City of Springfield, 541-726-3780 <br /> From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938 <br /> FOR IMME IATE RELEASE <br /> Public Wo kshops Slated Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 on Next Phase of Metro Waterways Study <br /> The ublic will have an opportunity to weigh in on guiding principles for potential metro <br /> waterway pr jects at two workshops to be held next week. <br /> Ama on Creek will be the focus of a workshop on Wednesday evening, Feb. 15, in the <br /> Bascom/Tyk son Room at the Eugene Public Library, 100 W. 10th Ave. Cedar Creek will be the <br /> I <br /> focus of a w rkshop on Thursday evening, Feb. 16, in the Library Meeting Room at Springfield <br /> City Hall, 22 Fifth Street. Both workshops start with a presentation at 6 p.m. followed by small <br /> group discu sion led by study staff. <br /> The .S. Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the cities of Eugene and <br /> ~ Springfield, ane County, and the Eugene Water & Electric Board, is conducting amulti-year <br /> <br /> I <br /> study to ide tify and evaluate problem areas and opportunities related to the function and health <br /> of waterway in the Eugene-Springfield area. The study examines flood protection and drainage <br /> manageme t, conservation of wildlife and aquatic habitat, water quality, open spaces, and <br /> recreational and educational opportunities. <br /> The oal of the study is to identify and select specific improvement projects and other <br /> non-structu al solutions designed to fix problems and improve overall conditions of local <br /> waterways. Amazon Creek in the Eugene area and Cedar Creek in the Springfield area were <br /> selected as initial planning areas for the study. A comprehensive overview of each planning <br /> area has n been completed and documents historic, existing, and projected conditions. <br /> The orkshops will provide a study update and an overview of baseline information for <br /> each planni g area.
