February 13, 2006
CONTACT: Tony Jobanek, Street Surface Supervisor
From Public nformation Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR iMMED ATE RELEASE
C ncrete Repairs to Start on Harris Street, Then Move to 29t" Avenue
Work has begun on Eugene's annual program to repair concrete streets.
A Pu lic Works crew on Monday started work on replacing several failed concrete
panels on H rris Street Between 29th and 30th avenues. During construction, there will be
intermittent elays and lane restrictions, and Harris Street will be closed to southbound traffic
between 29t and 30"' avenues until Monday, Feb. 27. The northbound traffic lane will remain
open.
After he concrete is poured on Harris Street, the crew will move to 29th Avenue between
Willamette S reef and Amazon Parkway. Work will begin on the westbound lanes of 29th

~ Avenue, and traffic will be subject to intermittent delays and lane detours during construction.
Eug ne has approximately 30 miles of concrete streets in its 511-mile street system.
Each year, r pairs are scheduled based on a variety of factors, including amount of damage,
use of the st eet, and availability of funds. Typically, the repair work includes removing the old
pavement, along minor subsurface repairs if needed, pouring new concrete, and keeping
traffic off the new surface until the concrete has thoroughly cured, usually about two weeks. In
2005, Publi Works crews repaired almost 25,000 square feet of concrete streets using more
than 600 cu is yards of concrete in the process.
Eug ne also has an annual program to repair its asphalt streets. Unlike concrete
repairs, whi h can be done during cool and damp conditions, asphalt repairs are best done
when it's wa m and dry. This year's asphalt pavement preservation program is scheduled to
begin in Ma .Both the concrete and asphalt repair programs are funded primarily with state
and local m for vehicle fuel taxes.
For pdates on local road repair projects, call the metro roadwork hotline at 984-8484, or
on the web t www.eugene-or.gov/pw.
Publi Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
