~S ~
~ ~i~ ~
August 28, 006
CONTACT: Tom Larsen, Traffic Engineer, 541-682-4959
From Publi Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
New Report Summarizes Crash Data on Eugene's Streets
Cra hes on Eugene streets, particularly those involving injuries, were up in 2005
compared t the previous year, but the number of 2005 crashes was below the 10-year average
in almost a ery category.
Acc rding to records compiled by the Eugene Public Works Department using information
provided by the Oregon Department of Transportation, there were a total of 1,928 reported
crashes in ugene in 2005. That's up about 10 percent from the 1,795 reported crashes in 2004
but still well below the 10-year annual average of 2,161 crashes.
Similarly, the 620 injury crashes in Eugene in 2005 compares to 416 injury crashes in
2004 and a 10-year average of 767 injury crashes per year. Other crash statistics from 2005:
• fight fatal crashes
• 9 bicycle crashes (86 of them involving injuries)
• 7 pedestrian crashes (four of them fatal).
"Lo g-term trends tell the true story, especially when the total number of crashes is low,"
said Tom L rsen, the City's traffic engineer. "While even one fatality is one too many, it's also
important t note that the number of crashes in a number of categories is significantly lower today
than it was 0 years ago."
The annual crash report also lists the intersections with the greatest number of crashes. In
2005, the in ersection of 11th Avenue and Bailey Hill Road topped the list, followed by: Seventh
Avenue an Jefferson Street; River Avenue/Silver Lane and River Road; Seventh Avenue and
Washingto Street; Coburg Road and Oakway Road/Southwood; Beltline Road and the
eastbound nramp on River Road; Delta Highway and I-105; Chad Drive and Coburg Road;

Valley Rive Drive and Valley River Way; and the eastbound ramp on Country Club Road at I-105.
Man of these intersections make the list every year. New to the top 10 list in 2005: Chad
Drive at Co urg and Valley River Drive at Valley River Way.
Eugene Public Works • www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl St eet, Eugene, Oregon 97501 • 541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us
