A ? I~
January 28, 008, 4 p.m.
CONTACT: ~~ublic Works Emergency Command Center, 682-4800
From Publicl!Information Section, 687-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMMEC~IATE RELEASE
ICE SNO~IN PARKING BAN LIFTED IN EUGENE, CONTINUED CAUTION URGED
The I ugene Public Works Department has lifted the snow/ice emergency ban on
parking alon snow routes.
Public Works Maintenance Director Jeff Lankston said warming temperatures and
continued pl~wing by Public Works crews have resulted in bare but wet pavement in many parts
of the city. F~ortions of many streets, especially those in the south hills, remain slippery, and
motorists ar~ cautioned that patches of ice may continue for several days if temperatures
continue to hover near or below the freezing mark.
The ~'ublic Works Department declared a winter weather emergency on Sunday
morning, follpwing heavy snowfall that blocked priority traffic routes. During ice and snow
emergency donditions, parked vehicles are not allowed on Eugene's priority snow routes.
Although the! parking ban has been lifted for now, it will be reinstated if temperatures drop below
freezing or ifl there is additional snowfall, Lankston said.
More'I than 200 cubic yards of gravelly sand was applied to slippery Eugene streets over
the past 36 Fhours. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are cautioned to be careful when
driving, bicy~ling, or walking on sanded roads, bike paths, sidewalks, or pedestrian crosswalks
until the san~ has been swept up. The sand collected from the clean-up effort will be used
throughout tl~e year on City street maintenance projects.
Property owners are reminded that they are responsible for clearing ice, snow, and sand

from the sidewalks next to their property so they are safe for pedestrians.
Eugq'ne residents can assist in the clean-up by reporting damaged City street trees or
other street problems to the Public Works Department at 682-4800. Detailed information on
priority snov~ routes can be found on the Internet at www.eugene-or.gov/pw.
Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541)682-5262 • FAx: (541)682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
