I•
specifica ly focussing on that objective.
'i5. Creat new wetlands/reestablish old wetlands--by removing
Imounds cr ated 30 - 35 years ago. Both locations shown for
creation- south and southeast of the major ash forest--are
opportune ies to expand the largest block of wetland in the park.
Enlarging an existing area is judged preferable to creating a new
non-conti uous area. Some of this work may be done in
conjuncti n with mitigation requirements for the park-and-ride
facility.
6. Park ntry plaza/29th Avenue terminus-- Landscape
architect ral treatment is desirable to create the park entrance

' and visua ly terminate the street. Amore formal design with
opportune ies for ornamental floral display would be appropriate.
7. Amazo Parkway widening--necessary a short distance south of

~I 24th Aven e to go with widening the parkway between 24th and 19th
Avenues. This project, not scheduled, is included in the .City's

I, transport tion plan to accommodate increases in southbound
traffic t 24th Avenue, at which point a significant portion
turns eas or west. The lane alignments on the south side of
24th will have to adjust to the east, displacing the current

!i approach o the jogging trail, and requiring a bridged approach
to the tr it about 200' - 300' upstream.
8. Centu y Ball Field--to be reoriented when rebuilt to better
fit with ther improvements and boundaries. The old backstop is
dcteriora ing and needs replacement. The diamond will be
downsized to a maximum 80 foot base path for youth baseball. It
can also ccommodate 70 foot baseball and 60 foot softball base
paths. Anew softball diamond, shown to the south of this field

I~ in earlie plans, is not included in this plan out of

' considera ion for ~.cti~ities desiring large open spaces, such as
kite flyi g events.
9. New m ltipurpose sports field--The area between the Century
infield a d Amazon Bike Path is large enough to accommodate one
adult siz d multipurpose athletic field, or two youth sized
soccer fi lds. This area, regraded twice during the history of
the park d semi-improved for athletic play, has potential for
wetland r storation. B~'cause of previous disturbance (graded
twice during the history of the park), and because of
surroundi g development and usage by both park and school
activities, this area is not judged to be a high value natural
resource rea, and therefore appropriate for continued and
enhanced thletic fields.
Athletic field lighting, once proposed for these fields as a
replaceme t of lighted fields at Chanced Park, is not a part of
the final proposal. Staff feel that the cost of adding lights to
'the propo ed fields, which can not be arranged for efficient
I
5
I
