August 3, 2 06
CONTACT John Bonham, Associate Engineer, 541-682-5300
From Publi Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
19"' Century Bridge May Be Causing 21St Century Pavement Failure
Tra is on Coburg Road will be restricted on Tuesday night as the Eugene Public Works
Departmen investigates a pavement failure on Coburg Road just south of Oakway Road.
Pubic Works staff recently noticed slumping in a section of the Coburg Road travel lanes.
Crews dug p a small section of the problem area and found deteriorated wood. That led to
historical r search that found evidence of a slough and wooden bridge in the same area where
the slumpin is occurring.
"Fir t we found signs of wooden timbers, like from a pier," said John Bonham, an
associate a gineer in the Public Works Department who is investigating the problem and potential
solutions. " hen we found an 1888 survey that referenced a bridge over a slough at that location."
GP Data of Eugene has been retained to analyze the subsurface using ground-
penetrating radar. This will allow Public Works staff to gather additional information, including the
exact locati nand extent of any underground structures, without digging up the roadway. When
the subsurf ce analysis has been completed, Public Works staff will determine the best approach
to repairing the problem.
The deployment of the radar equipment will require traffic restrictions on Coburg Road.
The investi ative work will be done Tuesday, August 8, beginning at 9 p.m. Motorists should
anticipate p lice flaggers, lane closures and possible detours.
Eugene Public Works • www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl St eet, Eugene, Oregon 97501 • 541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us
