October 24 2006
CONTACT Tony Jobanek, Public Works Maintenance Supervisor, 541-682-4835
From Publi Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
Euaene's 2006 Leaf Program Beains October 30
Eac year, the Eugene Public Works Department collects more than 15,000 cubic yards
of leaves in an effort to keep leaves from plugging the storm drainage system and degrading

water quali y in local streams. With that volume of material on city streets, it's important that
local reside is pay attention to some important leaf disposal tips:
• Co ider using leaves as compost or mulch rather than piling them in the street.
• Pile leaves well away from catch basins. If a catch basin does plug, scrape the leaves
away from he grate.
• Re ove leaves from sidewalks. Wet, slippery leaves are a hazard to pedestrians.
• Avo d putting leaves in bike lanes. If leaves are deposited in a bike lane, place them in
rows so th y do not block the flow of water, and leave at least half the bike lane clear.
• Pla a leaves so they do not obstruct the flow of traffic. Piles that even partially block a
traffic lane an cause motorists to swerve into oncoming traffic.
• Lea eat least 15 feet between leaf piles and parked cars.
• Kee leaf piles clean. Don't mix leaves with branches, rocks, or lawn clippings because
that make i difficult to reuse the leaves for mulch or compost.
• Wai to put leaves in the street until the weekend before the scheduled pickup date.
Leaves pla ed in the street too early tend to blow around or get washed into storm drains.
Eug ne Public Works Maintenance crews follow a regular collection schedule. Improved
streets with storm drainage systems receive first priority for leaf removal. Bike lanes along
arterials ar picked up weekly.
Her 's Eugene's 2006 leaf collection schedule:
Firs Round
Oct 30 through Nov. 3 west Eugene
No . 6 through Nov. 10 central Eugene
No . 13 through Nov. 17 north Eugene
No . 20 through Dec. 1 southeast Eugene
De . 4 through Dec. 8 southwest Eugene
Sec nd Round
De . 11 through Dec. 15 west Eugene
De . 18 through Dec. 29 central Eugene
Jan 2 through Jan. 12 north Eugene
Jan 15 through Jan. 19 southeast Eugene
Jan 22 through Jan. 26 southwest Eugene
For ore information, call Eugene's leaf program hotline at 682-5383, or visit the web at
www.euge e-or.gov/pw (click on the leaf link).
To port plugged drains or flooding problems, call Eugene Public Works Maintenance at
682-4800.
Lea delivery forms are available on the web, at local community centers, or by calling
682-4800.
Publi Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401
Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX: (541) 682-6826 • www.ci.eugene.or.us
