_ >
November 7 2006
CONTACT: Eric Johnson, Public Works Maintenance, 541-682-4800
Kelly Darnell, Marketing/Outreach Manager, Public Works Parks & Open Space,
682-4814
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
Eu ene Public Works Crews Respond to Flooding Calls Throughout the City
Eug ne Public Works crews are responding to more than 50 flooding-related incidences
throughout he city. Most of the calls involve street flooding primarily due to leaf-clogged catch
basins. Th re also have been reports of downed trees.
Cre s from the Maintenance and Parks and Open Space divisions will continue working
throughout he day unclogging catch basins, sandbagging areas of heavier flooding, and clearing
downed tre s. Meanwhile, Public Works crews are continuing to pick up leaves in central
Eugene. L cal residents can help reduce flooding by making sure that leaves piled in the street
are at least a foot from the curb.
The goals of the City of Eugene's Leaf Program are to prevent street flooding caused by
leaves clog ing gutters, catch basins and storm drains, and to protect water quality by removing
leaves that otherwise would decay in waterways and lower oxygen levels in aquatic habitats.
Public Wor s crews collect approximately 15,000 yards of leaves between October and January
each year.
Eugene Public Works ~ www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl S rest, Eugene, Oregon 97501 •541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us
