j
~
> ~ v
April 9, 200
CONTACT: Scott Milovich, Project Manager, 541-682-6086
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VIII
Work in Delta Ponds Area Closes East Bank Trail for Several Days
i
Work has begun on the next phase of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' project to improve
water quality and enhance wildlife habitat in the Delta Ponds area.
For the next several days, Pro Landscape Inc. will be removing blackberries and preparing
the ground for construction later this summer in the area just north of Valley River Drive. To allow
safe equipment access and operation of large mowers, portions of the East Bank Trail will be
closed during between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
The closed portions include aone-mile section from the Valley River Center parking lot to
the connecter path on the south side of the Boulders apartments and the connector path from the

~Iw', main trail to Goodpasture Island Road on the north side of the Valley River car dealerships.
Bicyclists and pedestrians must detour from the East Bank Trail using the Boulders connector
path, Goodpasture Island Road and Valley River Way to avoid the construction area. An alternate
route is to cross the Willamette River on the Owosso Bridge and take the West Bank Trail to the
Greenway Bridge at Valley River.
Starting in late June, the contractor is scheduled to begin work installing a culvert
connecting the two ponds at the north end of the causeway and grading and constructing new
banks and riparian areas in the pond on the east side of the East Bank Trail. That work is expected
to take several months to complete and will require extended closures of the East Bank Trail.
The Delta Ponds project is being done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in cooperation
with the City of Eugene and a number of state agencies and local volunteer groups. The first
~I phase of construction, completed in January 2006, established a connection between the
Willamette River and the two most southerly ponds in the Delta Ponds system.
II
Eugene Public Works ~ www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl Street, Eugene, Oregon 97501 •541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us
