~T
~ ~ ' ~
_ s:-
November 8 2007
CONTACT: John Bonham, Project Manager, 682-5300
Lee Shoemaker, Bicycling and Pedestrian Coordinator, 682-5471
' From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMME IATE RELEASE
M nroe-Friendly Bikeway Provides New North-South Link in Eugene
Eug ne has a new north-south bike route with this week s substantial completion of the
Monroe-Erie dly bikeway project.
The ikeway runs from the West Bank Trail along the Willamette River at Owen Rose
Garden do n Monroe Street to 13th Avenue, past the east side of the Lane County Fairgrounds,
and then up Friendly Street to 28th Avenue. More than 70 pavement markers were placed on
street surfs es to guide cyclists and remind riders and drivers that the streets are designated for
i
shared use. Informative signs also have been posted at intersecting bike paths and major cycling
routes.
~Irr
Ano her feature of the $440,000 bikeway project was the realignment of Monroe Street
and Blalr B ulevard to create a safer intersection In the area of Eighth Avenue. Earlier this
summer tw "speed tables" were constructed on Munroe Street between Eighth and 13th avenues,
slowing do n traffic to further increase safety. The neighborhood and local businesses also got a
chance to ake some improvements, especially in new public spaces at Eighth and Monroe.
Eleven bric -bordered art tiles were embedded in the new sidewalk, and additional landscaping
will be add d soon through a neighborhood matching grant.
Joh Bonham, the project manager, said he was pleased with the quality of work done by
the contrac or and subcontractors.
Lee Shoemaker, the City's bicycling and pedestrian coordinator, said the value of the new
bikeway wil grow as more cyclists realize that the improved route is in place. "A bicycle-friendly
route betty en south Eugene and the Willamette River has been part of Eugene's bike plan for
almost 30 ears," Shoemaker said. "It's great that we were able to line up state and local funding
to make thi vision a reality." Cyclists who have ideas for fine-tuning the route, for example, by
i
adding mor markers, are encouraged to contact Shoemaker at 682-5471.
Eugene Public Works • www.eugene-or.gov/pw
858 Pearl S reet, Eugene, Oregon 97501 • 541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us
